Recently, a reader tipped us off that two homes had been demolished on 16th Street in Graduate Hospital. Being curious as we are, we decided to check out the sitch at 913-15 S. 16th St., which were previously a couple of unfortunate looking homes with vinyl-covered bays.

In the past

Recent shot. Homes are gone.

Doing a little research, we discovered that these properties were purchased by Prestige Design and Construction late last year for a reasonable sum of $450K. The developers have built several homes in this neighborhood, including a few on the 2000 block of Pemberton, one of the 1900 block of Catharine, and most recently on 20th Street just south of Bainbridge. They've also built some homes in Northern Liberties, like a development on Leithgow Street that we covered a couple years back.

As you might imagine from the home pictured above, these guys specialize in contemporary design. And the interiors of their houses have contemporary touches just like their exteriors. While some people might decry this break from traditional Philadelphia architecture, we welcome the variation. We're not sticklers for perfect consistency except on a small handful of blocks where radically different architecture would really stick out. For example:

That home would look rather odd on the 1600 block of Ellsworth Street

Seems like that won't be a problem on the 900 block of S. 16th Street. Look for homes to rise here soon, and for a look that we've not seen much of in this neighborhood. We'll provide an update once we have a clue of what they'll look like.
