1944 South Street has been available for sale or lease for quite some time, and it appears that the owners have finally found a taker. This beautiful building has held a gallery in its commercial space for years, though the hours were varied and the gallery seemed to come and go and come back again over time. Now, according to signs recently posted in the windows, Philly Cupcake (The Cupcakery Boutique) will be taking over this space.

The space

The signs

Philly Cupcake already has a location at 12th & Chestnut, and is also involved in Philly Chocolate, at Walnut & Juniper. Apparently, these businesses are successful to the point that expansion seems like the way to go. While we’re excited about the prospect of a new retail business on South Street West, we’re a little skeptical as to whether this business will find the market it’s looking for.

With Pamcakes just a couple of blocks to the north, and coffee shops within two blocks in every other direction, we wonder whether this business will get much traction. Perhaps, if they play up the chocolate angle, and carry plenty of product from Philly Chocolate, they might entice some more customers, but even that seems like a stretch. You may remember, a candy and pastry shop opened and closed within a year or two at 21st & Pine, though this would represent a better location.

Another angle

What do people think? Is this the right business for this location, or will they struggle? Are cupcakes a trend or here to stay? Are we the only ones who wish this place was open now, so we could get some Bassett’s ice cream on this absurdly hot day?
