Philadelphia’s Department of Public Property (sounds exciting) awarded Marathon Farm (headed by Patrick Dunn, a former Greensgrow farmer and the founder of Emerald Street Urban Farm) a 15,750-square-lot at 27th and Master Streets. (See also: Food Forrest garden.) This is undoubtedly a large lot and as city gardens go (ask Greensgrow), to get that type of land you are usually headed far north of this location. This Brewerytown location isn’t too far north, and is just a bit out of the Fairmount borders. Brewerytown is the go-to location, it seems, for larger projects that don’t have the funding, space or support for a more central location. One looming question: is the soil here good enough to grow? Farmer Dan should take it to the Soil Kitchen to find out.
