Back in June, we wrote a little story about the efforts of Errol McAlinden and Gerard Regan to bring new life to the 4000 block of Baring St., a rough-looking block with some unattractive buildings and lots of vacant land.

Closer look

Having already constructed new buildings on the eastern end of the block accounting for at least twenty-five new units of impressive student housing, McAlinden & Regan are currently working on a new triplex on the southwestern corner of Preston and Baring Sts., replacing a long-vacant lot.

Coming along nicely

In spite of the rampant development on this block, there are still, somewhat amazingly, numerous vacant lots that remain. Some of these lots are owned by private investors, with others owned by the Greater Faith Baptist Church, the large religious institution that also calls this block home. On the plus side, the church pays property taxes for those lots.

With so much progress on Baring St., we’ve also noticed some isolated new development on surrounding blocks to the north and south, which definitely bodes well for the area. Regrettably, Baring St. still has one of the ugliest buildings we’ve ever seen, and it’s definitely here to stay.

Still heinous

Ah well, we can’t have everything in this world, right?
