Is the Free Library‘s main branch expansion finally about to get put on the front burner? Potentially great news for Philadelphia’s book renters this past weekend as the long talked about $175M expansion and renovation of the Free Library’s main branch on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway seems to have picked up some steam. New plans to cut back the main branch’s expansion from 189,00 square feet to 80,000 square feet were announced at the Logan Square Neighborhood Association meeting. But worry not: the cuts are actually a tremendously realistic goal that may help see the project take off. The newly planned reduction of the project’s expansion allows for much needed money to be diverted to long overdue repairs to the existing 80-year-old building. The new plans for the main branch are tentatively scheduled to be finished by 2015. —-Conrad Benner
