Last week, the Cambridge opened its doors at 1508 South St., the former home of the sometimes excellent but always kind of gross Tritone. We were able to make an appearance at the new spot’s opening night, and were impressed by the total transformation of the space. We were also impressed that this establishment was totally packed on its first night in business. With 24 taps, a full menu (we recommend the tasty nachos), and a wonderful outdoor patio space in the rear, this place will be a fixture in the neighborhood for years to come.
This new business is yet another step for a block of South Street West that’s reinvented itself in the past couple of years. The slightly more upscale Rex 1516 opened earlier this year a few doors down. Ditto the far more casual Quick Fixx, across the street. Sawatdee arrived in 2011, and Jet Wine Bar opened at the end of 2010.
As we’ve told you on numerous occasions, the 1600 block of South Street is on the cusp of taking a similar step, with several restaurants on the way by the end of the year, and a much larger restaurant coming to the commercial space that’s getting built at 1612-16 South Street. Yes, South Street West is continuing to improve every time we turn around. Just imagine what would happen if the Royal Theater wasn’t growing foliage out of its roof.
