Back in March, we told you about some demolition taking place on the northwest corner of 16th & Catharine. While sometimes we see buildings come down and nothing happens for many years afterward, we’ve seen the opposite situation here. A new home has been built, and looks to be approaching the finish line.

The other day

Meanwhile, there’s additional activity nearby to report. A few doors to the north, the long-vacant 764 S. 16th St. is seeing a home framed out on the property. This address was owned by Universal for several years, was then taken by the Redevelopment Authority, and sold to the current developers for around $115K. The same developers also purchased 760 S. 16th St. at the same time, and have pulled permits to build a home at that address as well.

One home is being built, another one is on the way

And on the southeast corner, a shuttered grocery will soon be sold. Last we heard it was on the market for just under $240K, but we’re guessing that the buyer is getting a lower price. We noticed a zoning notice on the building recently to build an addition, and use the building for three apartments, eliminating the commercial use entirely.

The future owners discovered, however, that the neighborhood would not support the elimination of the commercial use at this location and withdrew the application. We don’t know what they’ll ultimately propose here, but we’ll keep an eye out for any news. Hopefully, it will be something cool and exciting.
