Last summer, we told you about efforts to rehab 1600 Frankford Ave., a building with some interesting architectural details that we hoped would be preserved. We happened upon the building yesterday in the rain, and while it appears that the owners were able to preserve some aspects of the building, like its cornice and an old second-floor-doorway, a new addition gives the property a bit of a Frankenstein feel.
We give the owners all kinds of kudos for restoring the cornice, repointing the bricks, and eliminating the weird veneer on the Frankford side of the building. We just wish they would have opted for some other material as sheathing for the addition, which we’re guessing is used to access the four apartments in the building.
Another compelling aspect of this rehab is the plan for a small restaurant in the front of the building. At this time, we have positively no specifics on this, as it appears that it hasn’t gone before the community or the ZBA as of yet. Has anyone in the neighborhood heard any rumblings about what type of restaurant might be coming to this space?
We’ll keep our ears open and let y’all know the minute we hear anything concrete about this mystery restaurant.
