Earlier this month, neighborhood mainstay New Acropolis Restaurant, located at 1200 Frankford Ave., shut its doors without warning after several decades in business. The property was actively marketed for sale until January, with the last listed price at $789K. For the past several months, the diner space has been marketed for rent, at a price of $4,950/month, triple net.

The building

According to this thread on Philadelphia Speaks, the restaurant didn’t open up after July 4th. Instead, a sign appeared in the window thanking the neighbors for their business, along with a sign advertising that the space was available for rent. We swung by today and the “For Rent” sign appeared to be gone. Could the building have sold? Could someone have rented this space?

Up Frankford Ave.

Considering the success of Frankford Hall to the north, Johnny Brenda’s across the street, and the upcoming Fette Sau restaurant a few doors down, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise that a tenant has materialized for this space. So, what would people in the neighborhood like to see? Another diner concept? Perhaps an ethnic restaurant? Another gastropub?

Whatever it is, we’re just hoping that it adds something new to the mix in this area. Now, if only some of the several other available Girard Avenue corner commercial spaces could find buyers or renters…
