Months ago, in a post-Bloktoberfest haze, we brought you the good news that 1506 South St. would soon be home to the newest restaurant on the block, So Crepe. The space was formerly San Andres Salon and Day Spa, and for a few years sat mostly vacant or perhaps was used as a storage space for some other business on the block. We checked out So Crepe the other day, and found it to be a delightful addition to the neighborhood.

In the past

Current shot. So French indeed.

A peek inside

The restaurant, which seems to have seating for sixty or so, has a nice look, combining exposed brick, hardwood floors, and some reused wood from who knows where. We tried a couple of their offerings (one sweet, one savory), and left satisfied and eager to come back and try some of their other selections. And the prices were extremely reasonable too.

But that’s not all!

Directly across the street, 1507 South St. has been vacant for as long as we can remember, sporting an old ‘It’s a Wrap’ sign. Walking out of So Crepe, we noticed a couple of guys working on the storefront as well as a new sign and awning.

The new sign

We’ve heard absolutely nothing about South Street Vegetarian. All we have to go on is the sign, which suggests they’ll sell falafel, fritters, and fries. No permits have been pulled here from what we can tell, but an old food service license first issued in 2004 apparently still applies. With Govinda’s just a block away it seems that vegetarians in the neighborhood are about to have one more option for lunch and dinner. As is the case with Govinda’s, we’d imagine that omnivores will be welcomed here too.
