The George L. Wells Meat Co. has held down the corner where Delaware Ave. hits Frankford and Laurel for years, but the long operating business will soon be getting a new neighbor to the south. 918-80 N. Delaware Ave. is a huge parcel that sits next to Wells, right near the Northern Liberties Loop of the currently out-of-service Route 15 trolley.

We had told you in the past that the Wells building would be part of a larger project dubbed Wellshaus. It turned out to be a conceptual design, but then another proposal came down the way, for a six-building complex designed by Harman Deutsch Ohler Architects which didn’t include the Wells building. How about a quick reminder of the most recent plans?

When we last stopped by the site, we were thrilled to see that work was at long last underway. Demolition was completed months ago with little work since then. However, we saw heavy machinery, a new fence, and multiple workers on site recently, so it appears that it’s all systems go. While zoning permits are in place for the entire project, only two of the buildings received building permits late last year. Check out the current plans and status below.

We are extremely pleased to see movement here for this long N. Delaware Ave. stretch. This area has seen a huge boost recently and there are many more plans in the works close by. Future residents will have easy access to Fishtown, with the Fillmore, Other Half Brewing Co. and more just around the corner. Across the street, Craft Hall is right on the way to the revamped Delaware River Trail. Hopefully more construction permits will be issued soon to get more eyes and feet on the street around this auto-oriented location.
