Back in August, we first told you about a plan for twenty-two new homes on 5th Street in Northern Liberties. We were in the area the other day, and can tell you that there has been quite a bit of progress on this project, with many of the homes already framed out. You may recall, this site at 913-931 N 5th St. was once home to a nearly hundred-year-old building that housed Live Arts for the last few years.
Regrettably, the building was torn down several months ago and what you see above it what has taken its place. By our count, at least ten of the twenty-two planned homes have gone up so far, with foundations ready for the remaining homes, to ostensibly be built at some point in the near future.
The photo immediately above shows a distinct lack of foundations, due to the fact that there will be a driveway into the parking area that’s shared by the residents on the southern side of the development. As we told you previously, the developers are intending for these homes to start off as rentals, with the possibility of going condo at some point in the future.
While nearby businesses will surely be pleased to absorb some new customers, we’re still frankly pretty bummed that the Live Arts building couldn’t be reused as a part of this development. It definitely makes us appreciate efforts like the planned YWCA renovation in Graduate Hospital even more.
