In the summer of 2011, a highly anticipated new Superfresh opened on the second floor of a large new building at the corner of 2nd & Girard. Just north of the Piazza, this new structure was not only supposed to give Northern Liberties its much-needed new supermarket, but also a collection of new and exciting retail options on 2nd Street and Girard Avenue. The results here have been mixed at best, with tenants like Family Dollar and TMobile bringing excitement to nobody, but one of the best state liquor stores providing the neighborhood with a significant upgrade over the previous incarnation a block away.
A year and a half after the market opened upstairs, a couple of the street level retail spaces have remained unoccupied. According to Philadelphia Speaks, one of the last empty spaces is about to be filled by Zoom Room, a national franchise of dog training centers. The business will offer group training, individual training, dog birthday parties (huh?) and retail products as well. The entrance to the business will be a little storefront on Girard, but there’s a significant amount of space set back in the space. The grand opening is set for February 2nd.
With this new business coming in, it seems that the building now will only have one available retail space remaining- the large, prime, corner space. Hopefully, some restaurant will or bar will eventually sign a lease for the space, giving continuity to the retail on the street, and giving neighbors one more spot to enjoy. We’re guessing the asking price for the rent is on the high side, though…
