Great news for Northern Liberties vintage lovers as Jinxed in the Piazza begins to call your name. Jinxed, as you may know, is a long-loved Philly shop that sells art-based T-shirts, books, toys and prints from brands like Kid Robot, Rebel 8, Gama-Go and Upper Playground that originally opened its doors at 640 S. Fourth Street in 2004, but since 2009 has called 1050 N. Hancock Street (in the Piazza) home. Recent weeks, however, have seen a flourishing vintage flare start to take over part of Jinxed’s shop: couches, lamps, taxidermy, rugs, bed ware, stereos, bedroom sets, trunks, tables, typewriters . . . you name it. The whole right side of the shop was filled with shockingly well-priced vintage housewares when I randomly walked by the other day, having been lured in by a really cute green chair for $18 (which I quickly bought for my living room).
Things had changed a lot since the last time I was at Jinxed, and I loved it, so I decided to ask the owner Mike Supermodel (I’m assuming that’s not his birth name, but yes, that’s what he goes by) what spurred the focus on vintage: “We had some odds and ends starting around two years ago, but we got a lot more serious about two months ago,” says Supermodel. “The more vintage items we brought in, the better response we got and so we just ran with it.” Supermodel hand selects what vintage items they carry, depending on whatever catches his eye. “Selling what I like has been the theme from the beginning, and the vintage just allows me to take it farther,” he says. Reaction from old loyal customers and new found ones is the same, says Supermodel; they all love it! —Conrad Benner
