Up until eight years ago, to the best of our knowledge, the corner property at 18th and South Streets was used as a police mini station but has been vacant ever since. The owner (the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, located on Fitzwater Street and 22nd Streets) has been asking $2750 per month to lease the whole property at 1742 South Street. Word on the street is that the owners found a taker for this property, but, as it turns out, one that seems a bit redundant given the brand new Walgreens directly across the street from the property. Rumor is that a new pharmacy is going to be taking over the space in the upcoming weeks, which forces us to scratch our heads and ask, “Really?” Couldn’t they have found a better way to utilize this space than to put a pharmacy next to a pharmacy and across the street from what used to be a pharmacy?  (Anyone else feel like we are in a New Jersey town with a gas station on every corner?)

If the owners really wanted to secure the space for a tenant that would benefit the neighborhood they should have considered locating a business that wasn’t already represented footsteps away. —-Caitlin Connors
