Earlier this month, Shaban Kabab & Curry joined the retail sector in West Philly at 4125 Chestnut St., pretty much across the street from the new triplex that we told you about earlier this week. Previously, Philly’s Best Pizza was located here.

Was a pizza place

Close to this new eatery are two long-standing Indian restaurants, New Delhi and Tandoor India. Also, the Pakistani Kabobeesh is nearby. Truly, this small stretch of Chestnut Street gives students and neighbors alike plenty of choices of South Asian restaurants. Unlike the others though, Shaban serves pizza, likely due to leftover ovens from the previous business. It’s kind of an interesting choice, but it’s certainly one that sets them apart.

New restaurant

A block away will soon be Hub2 at 40th & Chestnut where there are plans for a seven-story building with retail that will be connected to the original Hub building, which contains Jose Garces' Distrito. A couple blocks further east, two historic brownstones were recently demolished to make way for 38Chestnut, a twenty-five-story mixed-use project at 38th & Chestnut.

These projects could help explain why this location was attractive for this new business. When they’re completed, Shaban and the other businesses in the area will have a collection of new customers close by, which certainly portends well for future profitability. Combined with the probability that new folks will soon be working at the warehouse across the street that was once the home of Graphics Arts Inc. and is now owned by Campus Apartments, and we're optimistic about the future for this new restaurant. Especially with such incredibly reasonable prices. Check 'em out!
