When John McShain, the millionaire Philadelphia builder who happened to own a few lakes in Ireland, took over the Barclay, he put his name behind what would become one of the most ornante condominium buildings in the city. The 2,675-square-foot three-bedroom three-bathroom flat at 9A is up for sale for $1,695,000 at 237 S. 18th Street. The hardwood-floor foyer and living room with working fireplace, wet bar and built-in bookcase would make a perfect Stephen Starr cigar bar. There are herringbone wood floors and a built-in closet in the master bedroom, a marble shower with glass doors in the master bathroom and a second bedroom that is being used solely as a library. Kitchens were meant to be open, in our opinion, but this one tries to make up for it with a Dacor range and Bosch dishwasher. And while it’s great to see actual artwork being used in homes (sepia-toned bridges and over-saturated palm tree canvases from Ikea don’t count), we wonder if the current tenants ran out of funds when they got to the bedrooms, which seem sparse with their tiny cot-like beds and empty walls. —–Caitlin Connors
