Pretty much the closest thing to food heaven are the carrot cake cupcakes at Tartes little pink hut of a bakery in the middle of a parking lot. Passing by it is easy, and if it weren’t for the awards, pink scooter or seductive window treats most people probably would. The building sticks out (literally and figuratively), which made us wonder: what was this before; was it always an island? We searched through the 1885 Friend’s Intelligencer and Journal (fun!) and found that 212 Arch Street used to be Plain and Fashionable Millinery, a tiny shop specializing in women’s hats. Using the Philadelphia Historical Records, we found out it looked just about the same (sans pink paint) in 1975.
