Great progress for Mayor Nutter’s Green 2015 initiative this week (which plans to revamp 500 acres of underused land around the city into sustainable green spaces by 2015) as exciting new plans were announced to transform the city’s Logan Circle area into a green destination for locals and tourists alike.

The plan calls for a complete overhaul of Sister Cities park, which if you didn’t know, is the area just south of Logan Circle that commemorates the city’s connection to ten fellow “sister cities” around the world. The renovations will be a huge step in the sustainable direction, and will see the construction of a cafe using green architecture, including geothermal technologies, a green wall, and a green roof (designed by DIGSAU architects, Pennoni Engineers and landscape architect Bryan Hanes). The plans also call for a boat pond, a new fountain to celebrate the city’s “sister cities” and, of course, new greenery and lighting. Construction on the park is set to start May 10, with a completion by 2012. —-Conrad Benner
